Golden Bat (黄金バット, Ōgon Batto) is a 1966 movie by Toei based off of the character of the same name. And is in addition, a movie adaption off the manga Golden Bat: Destroy the mysterious planet.

Plot[]

A mad mysterious alien scientist named Dr. Nazo threatens to destroy planet Earth. Professor Yamatone and his team make a plan in attempt to halt the doctor's evil plan, they were also building a super-destructive ray cannon to destroy Icarus. They visit Atlantis, and discover an ancient tomb belonging to a god of justice, and protector of the weak, they open the tomb and pour some water on the skeleton named Golden Bat who joins the UN agency to help save planet Earth from the evil Dr. Nazo and his team.

Legacy[]

  • The character's popularity had brought it to receiving a namesake animated series produced a year later (dubbed in English media as Phantaman) which broadcasted from 1967 to 1968.
    • There was also a cancelled animated project for Golden Bat titled New Golden Bat or The Golden Bat: Millennium Version in late 90's or early 2000's. [1]
  • Golden Bat and Dr Nazo‘s character designs were reused for their counterparts seen in the anime despite notable changes. A reboot manga set in the Taishō Era was also began publication in 2022.[2]

A Shout! Factory Classic Tokusatsu Collection Blu-Ray box

On February 12, 2024, Shout! Factory announced their acquisition of this film but used the title Golden Ninja as the localization for North American distribution released on a limited print Blu-Ray on February 27, 2024, with pre-orders from the official website. Only 2,500 were printed with the first 600 pre-orders being given a bonus poster with a customer’s Blu-Ray order.[3]
